Wind-heat invading the exterior

风热犯表 〔風熱犯表〕fēng rè fàn biǎo

Also wind-heat exterior pattern; wind-heat assailing the exterior. A disease pattern arising when externally contracted wind and heat affect the exterior, giving rise to mild aversion to cold, usually pronounced heat effusion, sweating, thirst, red painful pharynx, red tongue with thin dry white fur, and a pulse that is floating and rapid. Given the close connection between defense qì and lung qì, wind-heat giving rise to exterior patterns can also affect the lung and cause lung signs such as nasal congestion and sore throat. This pattern is called wind-heat invading the lung.

Medicinal therapy: Resolve the exterior with coolness and acridity; disperse wind-heat; diffuse lung qì. Use Lonicera and Forsythia Powder (银翘散 yín qiào sǎn) and variants or for more severe cases Mulberry Leaf and Chrysanthemum Beverage (桑菊饮 sāng jú yǐn).
