Clearing and depurating lung qì
清肃肺气 〔清肅肺氣〕qīng sù fèi qì
Also clearing metal; clearing metal and downbearing fire. A method of treatment used to address lung heat with lung qì ascending counterflow. Lung qì normally descends, but when the lung is distressed by fire, there are heat signs such as expectoration of yellow phlegm, dry mouth, heat effusion without aversion to cold, red tongue, and a rapid floating pulse. Fire also disrupts the normal downward movement of qì, causing counterflow ascent of qì and cough.
Medicinal therapy: The method of clearing and depurating the lung makes use of medicinals that clear lung heat and downbear lung qì such as mulberry root bark (Mori Cortex, 桑白皮 sāng bái pí), houttuynia (Houttuyniae Herba, 鱼腥草 yú xīng cǎo), phragmites (Phragmitis Rhizoma, 芦根 lú gēn), isatis root (Isatidis Radix, 板蓝根 bǎn lán gēn), lonicera (Lonicerae Flos, 金银花 jīn yín huā), white perilla seed (Perillae Albae Semen, 白苏子 bái sū zǐ), peucedanum (Peucedani Radix, 前胡 qián hú), and loquat leaf (Eriobotryae Folium, 枇杷叶 pí pá yè).
Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on LU, LI, and ST. Select BL-13 (Lung Transport, 肺俞 fèi shù), LU-10 (Fish Border, 鱼际 yú jì), LU-7 (Broken Sequence, 列缺 liè quē), LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), ST-40 (Bountiful Bulge, 丰隆 fēng lóng), and GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī); needle with drainage.
