Twelve source points
十二原穴 〔十二原穴〕 shí èr yuán xué
Also twelve sources. Twelve acupuncture points, two of which are each associated with the gāo (膏) and the huāng (肓), and the other ten being associated with one of the five viscera. For example, The sources of the lung are the two LU-9 (Great Abyss, 太渊 tài yuān) points on either side. See list below. When the five viscera are diseased, then use the twelve sources.
The notion of the twelve sources is similar but not to be confused with that of the twelve source points of twelve channels (see source point).
The Twelve Source Points
- Lung: bilateral LU-9 (太源 tài yuán)
- Heart: bilateral PC-7 (大陵 dà líng)
- Liver: bilateral LR-3 (太衝 tài chōng)
- Spleen: bilateral SP-3 (太白 tài bái)
- Kidney: bilateral KI-3 (太溪 tài xī)
- Gāo (膏): CV-15 (鳩尾 jiū wěi)
- Huāng (肓): CV-6 (脖胦 bó yāng, i.e., 氣海 qì hǎi)
