补脾益肺 〔補脾益肺〕bǔ pí yì fèi

Also banking up earth to engender metal. A method of treatment used to supplement the spleen to treat lung depletion, as in enduring cough with copious clear phlegm, poor appetite, abdominal distension, sloppy stool, lack of strength, and, in severe cases, water swelling of the limbs, a pale tongue with white fur, and a fine soggy pulse. Agents such as codonopsis (Codonopsis Radix, 党参 dǎng shēn), poria (Poria, 茯苓 fú líng), white atractylodes (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 白朮 bái zhú), dioscorea (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 山药 shān yào), costusroot (Aucklandiae Radix, 木香 mù xiāng), tangerine peel (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 陈皮 chén pí), and pinellia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 半夏 bàn xià) are used.
