Slippery pulse

滑脉 〔滑脈〕huá mài

The slippery pulse is very smooth-flowing and is classically described as pearls rolling in a dish or small fish swimming. A slippery pulse is commonly seen in:

  1. pregnancy, particularly in the early stages where extra blood is needed to nourish the fetus;
  2. some healthy people, indicating an abundance of qì and blood;
  3. phlegm-rheum patterns and food stagnation.

Similar pulse: The stirred pulse is a combination of the rapid, short, and slippery pulsesand is smooth-flowing. It differs from the slippery pulse mainly in bobbing like a bean. It is a sign of pain or frightand may be seen in sweating, heat effusion, diarrhea, seminal collapse, and flooding and spotting. It is also observed in pregnancy.
