A method of treatment used in febrile disease marked by exuberant internal heat to clear heat and cool the blood in the treatment of faint macules that have not fully erupted. A representative macule-outthrusting formula is Macule-Transforming Decoction (化斑汤huà bān tāng), which contains crude gypsum (Gypsum Crudum, 生石膏shēng shí gāo), anemarrhena (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 知母zhī mǔ), raw licorice (Glycyrrhizae Radix Cruda, 生甘草shēng gān cǎo), scrophularia (Scrophulariae Radix, 玄参xuán shēn), rhinoceros horn (Rhinocerotis Cornu, 犀角xī jiǎo), and rice. The method known as cooling the blood and transforming macules makes use of the same formula, Macule-Transforming Decoction (化斑汤huà bān tāng), plus moutan (Moutan Cortex, 牡丹皮mǔ dān pí), dried/fresh rehmannia (Rehmanniae Radix, 生地黄shēng dì huáng), isatis leaf (Isatidis Folium, 大青叶dà qīng yè), and lonicera (Lonicerae Flos, 金银花jīn yín huā) and minus raw licorice (Glycyrrhizae Radix Cruda, 生甘草shēng gān cǎo), and rice.
