Outthrusting macules

透斑 〔透斑〕tòu bān

A method of treatment used in febrile disease marked by exuberant internal heat to clear heat and cool the blood in the treatment of faint macules that have not fully erupted. A representative macule-outthrusting formula is Macule-Transforming Decoction (化斑汤 huà bān tāng), which contains crude gypsum (Gypsum Crudum, 生石膏 shēng shí gāo), anemarrhena (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 知母 zhī mǔ), raw licorice (Glycyrrhizae Radix Cruda, 生甘草 shēng gān cǎo), scrophularia (Scrophulariae Radix, 玄参 xuán shēn), rhinoceros horn (Rhinocerotis Cornu, 犀角 xī jiǎo), and rice. The method known as cooling the blood and transforming macules makes use of the same formula, Macule-Transforming Decoction (化斑汤 huà bān tāng), plus moutan (Moutan Cortex, 牡丹皮 mǔ dān pí), dried/fresh rehmannia (Rehmanniae Radix, 生地黄 shēng dì huáng), isatis leaf (Isatidis Folium, 大青叶 dà qīng yè), and lonicera (Lonicerae Flos, 金银花 jīn yín huā) and minus raw licorice (Glycyrrhizae Radix Cruda, 生甘草 shēng gān cǎo), and rice.
