Nourishing yīn and clearing the lung

养阴清肺 〔養陰清肺〕 yǎng yīn qīng fèi

A method of treatment used to address lung heat and yīn vacuity. The method of nourishing yīn and clearing the lung is used for two distinct conditions.

Yīn vacuity sore throat or diphtheria with red sore swollen throat.

Medicinal therapy: Use Yīn-Nourishing Lung-Clearing Decoction (养阴清肺汤 yǎng yīn qīng fèi tāng).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on KI and LU. Select KI-3 (Great Ravine, 太溪 tài xī), KI-6 (Shining Sea, 照海 zhào hǎi), and LU-10 (Fish Border, 鱼际 yú jì); needle with even supplementation and drainage.

Point selection according to signs: For pronounced swelling and pain, prick LU-11 (Lesser Shang, 少商 shào shāng) to bleed.

Vacuity taxation cough characterized by dry cough with little phlegm occasionally flecked with blood, postmeridian low fever, night sweating, oppression and dull pain in the chest, dry mouth, tongue with red margins and tip, and rapid fine pulse.

Medicinal therapy: Use Four Yīn Brew (四阴煎 sì yīn jiān), consisting of dried/fresh rehmannia (Rehmanniae Radix, 生地黄 shēng dì huáng), ophiopogon (Ophiopogonis Radix, 麦门冬 mài mén dōng), white peony (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 白芍药 bái sháo yào), lily bulb (Lilii Bulbus, 百合 bǎi hé), adenophora/glehnia (Adenophorae seu Glehniae Radix, 沙参 shā shēn), and licorice (Glycyrrhizae Radix, 甘草 gān cǎo).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on LU and KI. Select BL-13 (Lung Transport, 肺俞 fèi shù), BL-43 (Gāo-Huāng Transport, 膏肓俞 gāo huāng shù), LU-5 (Cubit Marsh, 尺泽 chǐ zé), KI-6 (Shining Sea, 照海 zhào hǎi), and KI-3 (Great Ravine, 太溪 tài xī); needle with supplementation.
