Lung is the florid canopy

肺为华盖 〔肺為華蓋〕fèi wéi huá gài

A phrase contained in Yu Shu’s annotation on the 32nd difficulty of The Classic of Difficult Issues (难经 nàn jīng) doubtlessly based on the statements in The Inner Classic (内经 nèi jīng). The Magic Pivot (灵枢 líng shū, jiǔ zhēn lùn) states, The lung is the canopy of the five viscera and six bowels. Plain Questions (素问 sù wèn, wěi lùn) states, The lung is chief of the viscera and is the florid canopy of the heart. The lung is the uppermost of all organs in the chest and abdomen, covering the others like a canopy. It also governs the exterior of the whole body and forms the outer defense of the bowels and viscera.
