Fire affecting the lung. Distinction is made between repletion and vacuity fire.

Patterns

Repletion fire (实火 shí huǒ) is characterized by cough with pronounced sound and scant phlegm or thick yellow phlegm sometimes flecked with blood and is accompanied by red tongue with yellow fur, and slippery rapid pulse.

Medicinal therapy: Use White-Draining Powder (泻白散 xiè bái sǎn).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on LU and LI. Select LU-10 (Fish Border, 鱼际 yú jì), LU-5 (Cubit Marsh, 尺泽 chǐ zé), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), and LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí); needle with drainage and prick LU-11 (Lesser Shang, 少商 shào shāng), and LI-1 (Shang Yáng, 商阳 shāng yáng), to bleed.

Vacuity fire (虚火 xū huǒ) is seen in enduring cough in yīn vacuity patients and is characterized by a faint cough and accompanied by tidal heat, night sweating, and a rapid fine pulse.

Medicinal therapy: Use Lily Bulb Lung-Securing Decoction (百合固肺汤 bǎi hé gù fèi tāng).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on LU and KI. Select BL-13 (Lung Transport, 肺俞 fèi shù), BL-43 (Gāo-Huāng Transport, 膏肓俞 gāo huāng shù), LU-5 (Cubit Marsh, 尺泽 chǐ zé), BL-23 (Kidney Transport, 肾俞 shèn shù), and KI-6 (Shining Sea, 照海 zhào hǎi); needle with supplementation.
