Lumbar pain in pregnancy

妊娠腰痛 〔妊娠腰痛〕rèn shēn yāo tòng

From The Origin and Indicators of Disease (诸病源候论 zhū bìng yuán hòu lùn). Lumbar pain during pregnancy. Attributable to kidney vacuity, to assailing wind-cold or to wrenching or contusion that causes static blood to obstruct the channels. In severe cases, there may be sagging of the fetus.

Patterns

Kidney vacuity (肾虚 shèn xū) pregnancy lumbar pain is associated with a limpness and lack of strength and is exacerbation by exertion.

Medicinal therapy: Warm and supplement kidney yáng with Young Maid Pill (青娥丸 qīng é wán).

Wind-cold (风寒 fēng hán) pregnancy lumbar pain is marked by cold pain that is exacerbated by exposure to cold.

Medicinal therapy: Expel wind and disperse cold. Use Four Agents Decoction (四物汤 sì wù tāng) plus mistletoe (Taxilli Herba, 桑寄生 sāng jì shēng) and saposhnikovia (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 防风 fáng fēng).

Wrenching or contusion (闪挫 shǎn cuò) gives rise to stabbing pain and to inhibited turning. Blood stasis is marked by pain of fixed location.

Medicinal therapy: Quicken the blood and relieve pain; supplement the kidney and quiet the fetus. Chew a walnut and swallow 9g of psoralea (Psoraleae Fructus, 补骨脂 bǔ gǔ zhī) with warmed wine.
