Liver welling-abscess

肝痈 〔肝癰〕gān yōng

An internal welling-abscess (yōng) affecting the liver that rises when liver depression transforms into fire and stagnant qì and static blood gather and concentrate. In some cases, phlegm due to accumulated dampness may be involved. In the initial state, there is dull pain at LR-14 (Cycle Gate, 期门 qī mén) gradually giving way to distending pain on the right rib-side that refuses pressure, and prevents the patient from lying on the affected side. The pulse is rapid and stringlike, and there is often aversion to cold with heat effusion. The signs gradually become more pronounced, and if proper treatment is not given, suppuration and rupture occur, with ejection and passing of foul-smelling brown pus and blood.

Biomedical correspondence: liver abscess; suppurative cholecystitis, pyogenic cholangitis, and hepatic echinococcosis.
