Intense lung heat

肺热炽盛 〔肺熱熾盛〕rè rè chì shèng

A disease pattern chiefly characterized by heat effusion; cough; panting; rough breathing; flaring nostrils; rapid onset; fire-heat signs.

Description: Heat effusion; thirst; cough, panting, flaring nostrils with hot nasal breath; chest pain; painful red swollen pharynx; short voidings of reddish urine; constipation; red facial complexion; red tongue with yellow fur; a rapid pulse. Onset is often rapid. This pattern is notably seen in warm disease. See qì-aspect patterns and upper-burner patterns.

Diseases: Cough; panting.

Biomedical correspondence: Seen in bronchitis; pneumonia; concurrent infections in emphysema and in bronchial asthma.

Treatment

Medicinal therapy: Clear and drain lung heat with Ephedra, Apricot Kernel, Licorice, and Gypsum Decoction (麻杏甘石汤 má xìng gān shí tāng) or White-Draining Powder (泻白散 xiè bái sǎn).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on LU and LI. Select BL-13 (Lung Transport, 肺俞 fèi shù), LU-7 (Broken Sequence, 列缺 liè quē), LU-5 (Cubit Marsh, 尺泽 chǐ zé), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), LU-10 (Fish Border, 鱼际 yú jì), GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī), and ST-40 (Bountiful Bulge, 丰隆 fēng lóng); needle with drainage, and prick LU-11 (Lesser Shang, 少商 shào shāng) to bleed.
