Heat damaging the network vessels of the lung

Heat in the lung causing bloody expectorate. Both repletion heat and vacuity heat can damage the network vessels of the lung.

Patterns

Repletion heat (实热 shí rè): Repletion heat is observed in diseases of recent onset. It is attributable to depressed evils transforming into heat and is characterized by expectoration of copious amounts of blood, heat effusion, red facial complexion, red tongue with yellow fur, and slippery rapid pulse.

Medicinal therapy: White-Draining Powder (泻白散 xiè bái sǎn) combined with Indigo and Clamshell Powder (黛蛤散 dài gé sǎn) plus imperata (Imperatae Rhizoma, 白茅根 bái máo gēn), lotus root node (Nelumbinis Rhizomatis Nodus, 藕节 ǒu jié), eclipta (Ecliptae Herba, 墨旱莲 mò hàn lián), and dried/fresh rehmannia (Rehmanniae Radix, 生地黄 shēng dì huáng).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on LU, LI, and PC. Drain LU-10 (Fish Border, 鱼际 yú jì), PC-8 (Palace of Toil, 劳宫 láo gōng), BL-13 (Lung Transport, 肺俞 fèi shù), and LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), and prick LU-11 (Lesser Shang, 少商 shào shāng), and LI-1 (Shang Yáng, 商阳 shāng yáng) to bleed.

Vacuity heat (虚热 xū rè): Vacuity heat is observed in patients suffering from chronic disease or depletion of lung-kidney yīn when vacuity fire scorches the lung; it is characterized by expectoration of scant amounts of blood or merely blood-flecked phlegm, periodic low fever, postmeridian tidal heat, flushing of the cheeks, pale red tongue, and rapid fine pulse.

Medicinal therapy: Lily Bulb Lung-Securing Decoction (百合固肺汤 bǎi hé gù fèi tāng). Add imperata (Imperatae Rhizoma, 白茅根 bái máo gēn), lotus root node (Nelumbinis Rhizomatis Nodus, 藕节 ǒu jié), eclipta (Ecliptae Herba, 墨旱莲 mò hàn lián), and dried/fresh rehmannia (Rehmanniae Radix, 生地黄 shēng dì huáng) to stanch bleeding and add sweet wormwood (Artemisiae Annuae Herba, 青蒿 qīng hāo), turtle shell (Trionycis Carapax, 鳖甲 biē jiǎ), lycium root bark (Lycii Cortex, 地骨皮 dì gǔ pí), and black swallowwort (Cynanchi Atrati Radix, 白薇 bái wēi), to clear vacuity heat.

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on LU and KI. Drain LU-5 (Cubit Marsh, 尺泽 chǐ zé), LU-6 (Collection Hole, 孔最 kǒng zuì), LU-10 (Fish Border, 鱼际 yú jì), and Hundred Taxations (百劳 bǎi láo), and supplement KI-2 (Blazing Valley, 然谷 rán gǔ), and KI-3 (Great Ravine, 太溪 tài xī).
