Four bends wind

四弯风 〔四彎風〕sì wān fēng

A skin disease most common in children, affecting the elbows, backs of the knees, ankles, etc. (the bends), and characterized by roughening and thickening of the skin, itching, and exudation when the skin is scratched open.

Biomedical correspondence: ectopic eczema.

Medicinal therapy: Dispel wind and percolate dampness. Oral: Mysterious Three Pill (三妙丸 sān miào wán). Topical: Indigo Powder (青黛散 qīng dài sǎn). In persistent cases, use kochia (Kochiae Fructus, 地肤子 dì fū zǐ), cnidium seed (Cnidii Fructus, 蛇床子 shé chuáng zǐ), zanthoxylum (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium, 花椒 huā jiāo), flavescent sophora (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix, 苦参 kǔ shēn), and alum (Alumen, 白矾 bái fán).
