Excrescence creeping over the eye

胬肉攀睛 〔胬肉攀睛〕nǔ ròu pān jīng

A gray-white fleshy growth at the canthus that progressively grows over the eye, in severe cases partially affecting vision. Excrescence creeping over the eye arises when heat congesting in the heart and lung channel cause qì stagnation and blood stasis. It may also result from yīn vacuity with effulgent fire.

Biomedical correspondence: pterygium.

Medicinal therapy: Course wind and clear heat; enrich and downbear fire; free the network vessels and disperse stasis. Use Anemarrhena, Phellodendron, and Rehmannia Pill (知柏地黄丸 zhī bǎi dì huáng wán) plus red peony (Paeoniae Radix Rubra, 赤芍药 chì sháo yào) and carthamus (Carthami Flos, 红花 hóng huā). Obstruction-Abrading bright spirit Paste (磨障灵光高 mó zhàng líng guāng gāo) can be applied topically.

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on local eye points, GB, and LR. Select BL-1 (Bright Eyes, 睛明 jīng míng), GB-20 (Wind Pool, 风池 fēng chí), and LR-14 (Cycle Gate, 期门 qī mén); needle with drainage. Prick Greater yáng (tài yáng) (太阳 tài yáng) to bleed.
