Dual vacuity of qì and yīn
气阴两虚 〔氣陰兩虛〕qì yīn liǎng xū
A pattern of both qì vacuity and yīn vacuity commonly occurring in febrile disease. It includes qì vacuity signs such as lassitude of spirit and lack of strength, faint low voice, sweating, shortness of breath, torpid intake, and sloppy stool, and yīn vacuity signs such as dry mouth, sore throat, vexing heat in the five hearts, postmeridian tidal heat, and night sweating. It occurs in the following circumstances:
- Warm-externally contracted febrile disease causing wear on the fluids giving rise to a vacuity desertion trend characterized by great sweating, hasty panting, vexation and thirst, pale red or dry crimson tongue, a large diffuse or fine rapid pulse.
- Advanced-stage warm heat disease and miscellaneous internal damage disease in which depletion of true yīn and major damage to original qì causes lassitude of spirit and physical fatigue, scantness of breath and laziness to speak, dry mouth and pharynx, low fever or tidal heat or vexing heat in the five hearts, spontaneous sweating, night sweating, red tongue with scant fur, and a large vacuous or rapid vacuous pulse.
- Evil lodged in the qì aspect in warm disease causing unthorough sweating that eventually damages qì and humor and gives rise to the appearance of white miliaria that is dry, white, and sheenless. In addition, dual vacuity of qì and yīn is also observed in certain consumptive diseases.
