Dryness tetany

燥痉 〔燥痙〕 zào jìng

Tetany (jìng) caused by dryness scorching the fluids. Dryness tetany is seen in advanced stages of febrile disease when exuberant heat has damaged liquid and begun to deprive the sinews of nourishment, thereby transforming into dryness and stirring wind. Dryness tetany is characterized by heat effusion, spasm of the limbs, dry mouth and throat, and dry skin.

Medicinal therapy: Treat first with Purple Snow Elixir (紫雪丹 zǐ xuě dān) to open the orifices and settle tetany, and then with Pulse-Restorative Decoction (复脉汤 fù mài tāng) to nourish yīn with sweet moist medicinals.

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on GV and LR. Needle with drainage at GV-20 (Hundred Convergences, 百会 bǎi huì), GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī), LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), GV-16 (Wind Mansion, 风府 fēng fǔ), LR-3 (Supreme Surge, 太冲 tài chōng), KI-3 (Great Ravine, 太溪 tài xī), and GV-26 (Water Trough, 水沟 shuǐ gōu), and prick the Ten Diffusing Points (十宣 shí xuān) to bleed in order to clear heat, extinguish wind, and settle tetany. Then needle with supplementation at KI-6 (Shining Sea, 照海 zhào hǎi), KI-2 (Blazing Valley, 然谷 rán gǔ), TB-2 (Humor Gate, 液门 yè mén), and SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo) to nourish yīn and increase humor.
