1. Any natural movement of the heart, such as joy, anger, or sorrow. For example, The Book of Rites (礼记 lǐ jì, lǐ yùn) states, What are the human affects? [They are] the seven things—joy, anger, sorrow, fear, love, loathing, and desire—of which a person is capable without learning.

2. The seven specific emotional and mental states or activities are joy, anger, worry, thought, sorrow, fear, and fright, which in excess can cause disease. See internal damage by the seven affects. Note: Five of the seven bear the same name as the five minds.
