GB-38 Yáng Assistance

阳辅 〔陽輔〕 yáng fǔ

Alternate names: 分间 fēn jiān, Parting Space; 分肉 fēn ròu, Parting of the Flesh; 绝骨 jué gǔ, Severed Bone

Channel: GB, foot lesser yáng (shào yáng) gallbladder channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the lateral aspect of the lower leg, 4 cùn superior to the tip of the lateral malleolus, on the anterior edge of the peroneus brevis muscle.

Classical location: Four cùn above the outer ankle, in front of the assisting bone, three fēn from the edge of the bone, seven cùn above Hill Ruins (GB-40). From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: See GB-37.

Action: Harmonizes the lesser yáng (shào yáng); disperses cold and eliminates heat; soothes the liver and resolves depression; quickens the network vessels and relieves pain.

Modern indications: Hemilateral headache; pain in the outer canthus; scrofula; axillary swelling and pain; leg qì (jiǎo qì, beriberi); painful swollen throat; distention and pain in the chest and rib-side: wilting-impediment (wěi bì) of the lower limbs.

Classical indications: leg qì (jiǎo qì, beriberi); hypertonicity of the sinews; throat impediment (hóu bì); hemilateral wind.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.3‒0.7 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 3‒7 cones; pole 5‒20 min.

Point groups: River (jīng) (fire) point.

Point name meaning:

GB-38 is on the yáng aspect of the leg in front of the fibula, which in Chinese is called the 辅骨 (fǔ gǔ), literally, assisting bone. Thus the point is called Yáng Assistance. See acupoint names: origins, meanings, and translations.
