海带 〔海帶〕hǎi dài

Use: Medicinal

Category:

Properties: Salty; cold; nontoxic*.

Indications:

Softens hardness and transforms phlegm; disinhibits water and drains fire.

goiters and tumors of the neck; mounting (shàn) and concretions; water swelling; leg qì (jiǎo qì).

Dosage & Method: Oral: Decoct (4.5–9g); use in pills or powders.

Notes: The term hǎi dài 海带 is now used to denote plants of the laminariaceae eaten as food, notably kūn bù 昆布, kelp.
