Use: Medicinal

Properties: Sweet and acrid; balanced; toxic.

Channel entry: Large intestine and lung channels.

Actions and indications: Disperses swelling and draws out pus (used topically); lubricates the intestines and frees stagnation (taken orally). Treats toxin swelling of welling- and flat-abscesses (yōng jū); scrofula; throat impediment (hóu bì); scab (jiè), lài, and lichen (xiǎn); water swelling; abdominal fullness; dry bound stool; prolapse of the rectum.

Dosage and method: Topical: Apply crushed or grind and apply mixed. Oral: Use in pills.

Product description: The dried seeds are broad ovate, 8–18 mm long, and 6–9 mm in diameter. The ventral side is flat, and the dorsal is rounded. At the smaller end there is a spongy caruncle and hilum. At the other end is the chalaza. Running between the hilum and chalaza is a distinct raphe. The smooth shiny surface is maroon with cloudlike yellowish-brown patches.

Quality: Large full beans that are maroon in color and bear a good sheen are best.

Production area: Most parts of China.
