Use: Medicinal

Properties: Bitter and astringent; balanced.

Channel entry: Heart, lung, small and large intestines channels.*

Actions and indications: Clears heat, disinhibits water, kills worms, and stanches bleeding. Treats dysentery; diarrhea; cough and vomiting of blood (blood ejection); bloody stool; metrorrhagia; gān accumulation; abdominal distension; dermatitis; eczema; bleeding from wounds. Used in bacillary dysentery herbal formula (jùn lì cǎo yào fāng).

Production area: Produced mainly in Jiāngsū, and to a lesser extent in Guǎngdōng, Guǎngxī, Fújiàn, Sìchuān, Jiāngxī, and ānhuī.
