Origin in unofficial sources: Piper wallichii (Miq.) Hand.-Mazz. var. hupehense (C. DC.) Hand.-Mazz.; Piper puberulum (Benth.) Maxim.

Use: Medicinal

Properties: Acrid; warm; nontoxic*.

Channel entry: Liver, spleen, and small intestine channels.*

Actions and indications: Dispels wind-damp, frees the network vessels, strengthens the lumbus and the feet, and relieves pain. Treats wind-cold-damp impediment (fēng hán shī bì); sinew and bone pain; lumbar pain; postoperative pain.

Dosage and method: Oral: Decoct (3–9g) or steep or boil in wine. Topical: Crush and stir-fry and apply as a compress.

Quality: Neat grayish-brown stems with undamaged leaves are the best.

Production area: Piper wallichii var. hupehense: Húběi, Húnán, Guìzhōu, Yúnnán, Sìchuān. Piper puberulum: Sìchuān, Húnán, Yúnnán, and to a lesser extent in Guìzhōu, Guǎngdōng, Guǎngxī, and Húběi.
