Use: Medicinal

Properties: Bitter and acrid; warm; toxic.

Actions and indications: Calms epilepsy and relieves pain. Treats mania and withdrawal; wind epilepsy; wind impediment (fēng bì); reversal pain; cough and panting; stomach pain; enduring dysentery; enduring diarrhea; prolapse of the rectum; toothache; swollen welling-abscesses (yōng zhǒng).

Dosage and method: Oral: Pills and powders (0.6–1.2g). Topical: Grind or decoct as a wash.

Quality: Large plump seeds without extraneous matter are best.

Production area: Produced mainly in Hénán, Héběi, and Liáoníng, and also in Jílín, Hēilóngjiāng, Jiāngxī, Qīnghǎi, and Shǎnxī (Shaanxi), Zhèjiāng, and Tibet.
