Red Upborne Elixir
红升丹 〔紅升丹〕hóng shēng dān

Ingredients:
- Shuǐ yín (水银 Hydrargyrum , mercury) 30g
- Huǒ xiāo (火硝 Nitrum Rubrum, red niter) 120g
- Bái fán (白矾 Alumen , alum) 30g
- Xióng huáng (雄黄 Realgar , realgar) 15g
- Zhū shā (朱砂 Cinnabaris , cinnabar) 15g

Action: Expels pus and toxin; eliminates putridity.
Indication: Sores that fail to heal and continue to exude pus after bursting, or whose surface is hard and dark purple.
Category:
Method: The agents are sublimed together, and then ground to a powder. Sprinkle on the affected area.
Warnings: This formula contains mercuric oxide and arsenic. It is for external use only. Oral administration is strictly contraindicated.
Rationale: All six agents resolve toxin. In addition, Shuǐ yín, Xióng huáng, and Bái fán kill worms. Xióng huáng, Bái fán, and Lǜ fán dry dampness and dispel phlegm. Note that this formula contains Shuǐ yín, Bái fán, and Xiāo shí, which are sublimated together to form three-agent sublimate (shēng yào), the red form of which in Chinese bears the same name as this formula.
