Pueraria Decoction Plus Magnolia Flower and Chuānxiōng
葛根加辛夷川芎汤 〔葛根加辛夷川芎湯〕 gé gēn jiā xīn yí chuān xiōng

Ingredients
Indications: Nasal congestion, rhinitis, paranasal sinusitis.
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Má huáng is a diuretic. Gé gēn improves blood circulation in the head. Xīn yí helps to relieve nasal congestion and reduce nasal mucus. Chuān xiōng (actually Cnidium officinale in the original Japanese formula) helps expels pulse and relieves headache. Chuān xiōng and Guì zhī are vasodilators.
Variations:
- Severe
nasal congestion : Add Bái zhǐ (白芷 Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, Dahurian angelica) and Fáng fēng (防风 Saposhnikoviae Radix, saposhnikovia). - Purulent nasal mucus: Add Cāng ěr zǐ (苍耳子 Xanthii Fructus, xanthium [fruit]), Jīng jiè (荆芥 Schizonepetae Herba, schizonepeta), Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]), Jié gěng (桔梗 Platycodonis Radix, platycodon [root]), and Shí gāo (石膏 Gypsum Fibrosum, gypsum).
Notes: This is Gé gēn tāng (葛根汤 Pueraria Decoction) with the addition addition of Chuān xiōng and Xīn yí.
