Pueraria Decoction
葛根汤 〔葛根湯〕gé gēn tāng
Source: Shāng Hán Lùn 伤寒论
Ingredients:
- Gé gēn (葛根 Puerariae Radix, pueraria [root]) 12g
- Má huáng (麻黄 Ephedrae Herba, ephedra) 9g
- Guì zhī (桂枝 Cinnamomi Ramulus, cinnamon twig) 6g
- Sháo yào (芍药 Paeoniae Radix, peony [root]) 6g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) 6g
- Shēng jiāng (生姜 Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, fresh ginger) 9g
- Dà zǎo (大枣 Jujubae Fructus, jujube) 12
Action: Promotes sweating and resolves the exterior; upbears liquid and soothes the sinews.
Indication: External contraction of wind-cold. Signs: heat effusion, absence of sweating, aversion to cold,

Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: This formula is essentially Guì zhī tāng (桂枝汤 Cinnamon Twig Decoction)with Má huáng and Gé gēn. The Má huáng promotes sweating, while the Gé gēn resolves the stiffness of the neck.
