Water-Abducting Poria Decoction

导水茯苓汤 〔導水茯苓湯〕 dǎo shuǐ fú líng tāng

Source: Qí Xiào Liáng Fāng 奇效良方

Alternate Chinese names: Fú líng dǎo shuǐ tāng (茯苓导水汤 Poria Water-Abducting Decoction)

Ingredients

Actions: Moves qì and transforms dampness; disinhibits water and disperses swelling.

Indications: Water swelling marked by pitting edema of the extremities, panting and fullness, and rough voidings of scant urine. Tongue fur: Thick and white. Pulse: Moderate.

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: Fú líng is a bland-sweet dampness-percolating medicinal, while Bái zhú is a warm bitter dampness-drying agent. Together they fortify the spleen, thereby promoting the movement and transformation of water-damp. Zé xiè percolates water-damp, while Bīng láng and husk move qì and disinhibit water. These three agents abduct the water-damp out of the body. Sāng bái pí drains the lung (the upper source of water) and moves water. Zǐ sū, Chén pí, Shā rén, and Mù xiāng move qì and abduct stagnation, helping the movement and transformation of water-damp. Mù guā helps the elimination of dampness, while Dēng xīn cǎo helps the Fú líng to percolate water-damp. Finally, Mài dōng is added to prevent damage to yīn humor by the water-disinhibiting agents.
