Dāng guī, which is acrid and aromatic but moist, warm and dispersing, sweet and soothing, works with Bái sháo and Dà zǎo to supplement the blood and regulate menstruation, and with Guì zhī and Shēng jiāng to disperse cold and quicken the blood. It acts with Yí táng and Gān cǎo to relax tension and relieve pain. It is therefore an important agent for postpartum abdominal pain attributable to blood vacuity and congealing cold.
