Actions: Moves qì and disinhibits water; clears heat and disinhibits dampness.
Indications: Binding dampness and heat (with damp more sever than heat) that obstruct qì and give rise to abdominal distension and pain, diarrhea with watery stool, heart vexation, and thirst with reddish urine. Tongue: Red with a slimy yellow fur. Pulse: Soggy and rapid.
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: This formula is a combination of Wǔ líng sǎn (五苓散 Poria Five Powder)and Liù yī sǎn (六一散 Six-to-One Powder)with Chén pí, Mù xiāng, Bīng láng, and Shēng jiāng. Wǔ líng sǎn (五苓散 Poria Five Powder)promotes qì transformation and disinhibits water, which uses Ròu guì (or twig) to strengthen bladder function. Ròu guì combined with Huá shí helps to promote heart-kidney interaction, warm yáng, and disinhibit water. Liù yī sǎn (六一散 Six-to-One Powder)clears heat and disinhibits dampness, making the dampness go out with the urine and checking the diarrhea. Water needs the propelling power of qì if it is to be moved; hence Chén pí, Mù xiāng, Bīng láng, and Shēng jiāng are added.
