Rationale: Chuān wū is the main tuber out of which the more commonly used fù zǐ grows. It is hot, acrid, and toxic. It enters the spleen liver, and kidney channels. It expels cold-damp, disperses wind, warms the channels, and relieves pain. It is commonly used to treat wind-cold-damp impediment (fēng hán shī bì), hypertonicity of the limbs, hemiplegia, head wind, pain in the heart [region] and abdomen, and toxin swelling of yīn flat-abscess (yīn jū). Chuān wū possesses a certain toxicity (aconitine), which is removed by processing and decoction. In this formula, the addition of ginger juice and honey serves to resolve the toxicity.
