Lily Bulb and Talcum Powder
百合滑石散 〔百合滑石散〕 bǎi hé huá shí sǎn
Source: Jīn Guì Yào Lüè 金匮要略
Ingredients
- Bǎi hé (百合 Lilii Bulbus, lily bulb) (mix-fried) 15g
- Huá shí (滑石 Talcum , talcum) 30g
Actions: Nourishes lung yīn; calms the heart spirit; clears interior heat; and disinhibits urine.
Indications: Hundred-union disease (bái hé bìng, also called lily disease), characterized by signs of heart-lung yīn vacuitysuch as disquieted heart spirit, vexation and agitation, desire but inability to sleep, desire but inability to eat, deceptive sensations of cold and heat, bitter taste in the mouth, yellow urine, heat effusion, and a fine, slippery, rapid pulse.
Rationale: Bǎi hé is sweet and slightly cold; its qì and flavor are mild. It can enrich lung yīn, as well as clearing the heart and quieting the spirit. Hence, it is the sovereign agent in the treatment of hundred-union disease (also called lily disease). Although hundred-union disease is not essentially associated with heat effusion, if it persists, fire transformation can occur, resulting in exuberant internal heat that manifests in the form of heat effusion. For this reason, Huá shí is included for its heat-clearing and water-disinhibiting properties that carry the heat out with the urine, but it should be used sparingly since hundred-union disease is a yīn depletion pattern that can be exacerbated by profuse urination.
