Pus-Outthrusting Powder
透脓散 〔透膿散〕tòu nóng sǎn
Source: Wài Kē Zhèng Zōng 外科正宗
Ingredients:
- Chuān shān jiǎ (穿山甲 Manis Squama, pangolin scales) 3–9g
- Zào jiǎo cì (皂角刺 Gleditsiae Spina, gleditsia thorn) 3–9g
- Shēng huáng qí (生黄芪 Astragali Radix Cruda, raw astragalus [root]) 9–15g
- Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 9–12g
- Chuān xiōng (川芎 Chuanxiong Rhizoma, chuanxiong [rhizome]) 6–9g
Action: Expels pus and toxin.
Indication: Suppurating
Category: External medicine formulas
Method: Modern method is to decoct and take with 1 or 2 spoons of wine.
Rationale: Huáng qí is used raw to supplement qì and draw out pus. Dāng guī and Chuān xiōng nourish and quicken the blood. Chuān shān jiǎ and Zào jiǎo cì are mobile and penetrating (shàn cuàn néng zǒu) agents that free the channels, expel sore-toxin and hasten rupturing. A small quantity of wine quickens the blood and frees the network vessels, thus enhancing the effect of the other agents.
