Heat-Clearing Blood-Supplementing Decoction

清热补血汤 〔清熱補血湯〕 qīng rè bǔ xuè tāng

Ingredients

Indications: Mouth sores, fatigue, and reduced eating with signs being more pronounced in late afternoon (rì bū).

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: The signs all indicate that the formula treats severe damage to yīn. Late afternoon heat effusion in particular is a sign of consumption. Mouth sores are a sign of yīn vacuity with effulgent fire. Yīn vacuity is the root of the disorder, while heat is the tip. Shú dì huáng nourishes yīn and supplements the blood. Xuán shēn and Zhī mǔ enrich yīn and downbear fire. Mài dōng nourishes yīn and clears heat. Wǔ wèi zǐ enriches the kidney and engenders liquid. Dāng guī and Sháo yào nourish the blood. Mǔ dān pí clears heat and cools the blood. Chuān xiōng quickens the blood and relieves pain, while Chái hú upbears yáng.
