Lophatherum Gruel

竹叶粥 〔竹葉粥〕 zhú yè zhōu

Ingredients

Actions: Clears heart fire; eliminates heat vexation; disinhibits urine.

Indications: Warm disease with thirst, increased fluid intake, heart vexation, red eyes, mouth sores, short scant voidings of yellow or reddish urine, and strangury (include acute cystitis); child fright wind.

Method: Fresh bitter bamboo leaf may also be used, but the amount should be increased to 30–45g. If regular medicinal danzhuye is used instead, use 30–60g. Boil the rice in a strained decoction of the kuzhuye and shigao, adding sugar before serving.

Rationale: Kǔ zhú yè and Dàn zhú yè both clear heat and disinhibit urine. The former is better for clearing heart heat and wind-heat from the head and face, while the latter is better for disinhibiting damp-heat since its diuretic action is stronger. Either may be used in this gruel. Shí gāo is essentially calcium sulfate. It is a sweet and very cold agent that has a powerful heat-clearing and fire-draining action used to treat repletion heat febrile patterns with persistent high heat effusion, clouded spirit, delirious speech, mania, great thirst with increased fluid intake, and a forceful pulse. It also treats stomach fire headache, toothache, swollen gums, and mouth sores.
