Hovenia Gruel

枳椇粥 〔枳椇粥〕 zhǐ jù zhōu

Source: Lǎo Lǎo Héng Yán 老老恒言

Ingredients

Actions: Eliminates vexation and thirst; resolves alcohol toxin.

Indications: Drunkenness, heat vexation, and thirst.

Method: Boil the rice to a thin gruel in a strained decoction of the honey tree fruit.

Rationale: Zhǐ jù zǐ is sweet and sour, warm, and nontoxic. Its flavor is largely explained by its glucose and malic acid content. The Chinese discovered its liquor-resolving and thirst-allying qualities long ago, and have widely used it for inebriation and for dispersion-thirst.
