Gardenia and Dried Ginger Decoction

栀子干??? 〔梔子乾〕 zhī zǐ gān jiāng tāng

Source: Shāng Hán Lùn 伤寒论

Ingredients

Actions: Clears heat and harmonizes the center.

Indications: Inappropriate precipitation, leaving residual heat, damage to spleen yáng (upper body heat and lower body cold), manifesting in the form of persistent generalized heat effusion (after abatement of aversion to cold),heat vexation in the chest, thin sloppy stool, rumbling intestines, and abdominal pain. Tongue: Pale red with glossy yellow fur.

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: Zhī zǐ is a cold bitter agent that clears residual heat from the chest and diaphragm. The Dàn dòu chǐ used in Zhī zǐ dòu chǐ tāng (栀子豆豉汤 Gardenia and Fermented Soybean Decoction)is not used in this formula because the heat in this case is residual heat rather than depressed heat that fails to be diffused. Gān jiāng is used for its warmth and acridity to warm the center and harmonize the stomach, thereby addressing the damage to the spleen and stomach.

Notes: This is Zhī zǐ chǐ tāng (栀子豉汤 Gardenia and Fermented Soybean Decoction) minus the Dàn dòu chǐ and plus Gān jiāng.

Similar: Zhī zǐ chǐ tāng (栀子豉汤 Gardenia and Fermented Soybean Decoction)
