Rationale: Propping rheum (支饮 zhī yǐn) arises when rheum collects in the below the heart or chest and diaphragm, and thrusts upward into the lung, impairing depurative downbearing. It manifests in the form of oppression in the chest, shortness of breath, cough, and panting. It also manifests in the form of dizzy head and vision. The Chinese 支, though often meaning branch, in this context is explained as meaning to prop up, because the patient experiences difficulty in breathing when he lies flat. The formula is a simple one. Zé xiè is a strong water-disinhibiting agent that draws the rheum out with the urine. Bái zhú fortifies the spleen and stomach, stopping the rheum at source. Thus, one agent treats the tip, while the other treats the root.
