Bush Cherry Kernel Gruel
郁李仁粥 〔郁李仁粥〕 yù lǐ rén zhōu

Ingredients
- Yù lǐ rén (郁李仁 Pruni Semen, bush cherry kernel) 10–15g
- Jīng mǐ (粳米 Oryzae Semen, non-glutinous rice) 30–60g
Actions: Moistens the intestines and frees the stool; disinhibits water and disperses swelling.
Indications: Dry bound stool with inhibited urination, water swelling, abdominal fullness. Edema in cirrhosis of the liver.
Method: Crush and finely grind the bush cherry plum with water and reserve the fluid, or crush decoct and strain. Boil the rice in the bush cherry plum fluid or decoction.
Rationale: Yù lǐ rén balanced, acrid, bitter, sweet, and nontoxic. It enters the spleen, large and small intestine channels. It moistens dryness and lubricates qì, precipitates qì, and disinhibits water. It is commonly used in Chinese medicine to free the stool in patients also suffering from water swelling.
