Ingredients
- Huò xiāng (藿香 Pogostemonis Herba, patchouli) 12g
- Mù xiāng (木香 Aucklandiae Radix, costusroot) 9g
- Hòu pò (厚朴 Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, officinal magnolia bark) 12g
- Zǐ sū gěng (紫苏梗 Perillae Caulis, perilla stem) 12g
- Cāng zhú (苍朮 Atractylodis Rhizoma, atractylodes [rhizome]) 12g
- Fú líng (茯苓 Poria , poria) 12g
- Fǎ bàn xià (法半夏 Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum, pro formula pinellia [rhizome]) 9g
- Qián hú (前胡 Peucedani Radix, peucedanum [root]) 12g
- Shēng jiāng (生姜 Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, fresh ginger) 9g
- Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]) 9g
Actions: Transforms dampness with aromatic agents; diffuses the lung and disperses phlegm.
Indications: Externally contracted wind-cold with internal food accumulation, characterized by distension and pain of the stomach duct and abdomen, nausea, flatulence, heat effusion, aversion to cold, and in some cases thin sloppy stool, constipation, or cough. Tongue fur: White and glossy or mixed yellow and white.
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: The sovereign, Huò xiāng, is an aromatic turbidity-transforming agent that moves qì and harmonizes the center. Zǐ sū gěng and Shēng jiāng resolve the exterior and harmonize the stomach. Qián hú and Bàn xià dispel phlegm and relieve cough. Cāng zhú and Fú líng dry and percolate dampness. Hòu pò and Mù xiāng move qì and loosen the center. All these are the minister agents.
