Triple Yáng Clearing and Resolving Decoction
三阳清解汤 〔三陽清解湯〕 sān yáng qīng jiě tāng

Ingredients
- Gé gēn (葛根 Puerariae Radix, pueraria [root]) 24g
- Jīn yín huā (金银花 Lonicerae Flos, lonicera [flower]) 24g
- Lián qiào (连翘 Forsythiae Fructus, forsythia [fruit]) 24g
- Shí gāo (石膏 Gypsum Fibrosum, gypsum) 30g
- Chái hú (柴胡 Bupleuri Radix, bupleurum [root]) 24g
- Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]) 12g
- Dà qīng yè (大青叶 Isatidis Folium, isatis leaf) 30g
- Pú gōng yīng (蒲公英 Taraxaci Herba, dandelion) 30g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) 9g
Actions: Outthrusts the evil with cool acrid agents; engenders liquid and allays thirst; disinhibits the throat and disperses binds.
Indications: Exuberant heat the three yáng channels or warm disease entering the qì aspect, causing massive head scourge characterized by persistent
Method: Decoct with water, and split into three doses over one day.
Rationale: Gé gēn, Jīn yín huā, and Lián qiào cool and disperse greater yáng exterior heat. Shí gāo clears and resolves yáng brightness interior heat. Chái hú and Huáng lián harmonize the yáng brightness and resolve the heat affecting it. Dà qīng yè and Pú gōng yīng clear heat and resolve toxin. Gān cǎo harmonizes the other agents and nourishes the stomach.
Variations:
- Pronounced exterior signs: Add Jīng jiè (荆芥 Schizonepetae Herba, schizonepeta) and Bò hé (薄荷 Menthae Herba, mint).
Constipation ,delirious speech , and thick dry yellow fur: Add raw Dà huáng (大黄 Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, rhubarb) and Xuán míng fěn (玄明粉 Natrii Sulfas Exsiccatus, refined mirabilite) (the latter taken infused in the decoction).- Signs such as
vomiting of blood ,nosebleed (nǜ xuè), and macules: Omit the Chái hú (柴胡 Bupleuri Radix, bupleurum [root]) and add Shú dì huáng (熟地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, cooked rehmannia [root]), Mǔ dān pí (牡丹皮 Moutan Cortex, moutan [bark]), and Bái máo gēn (白茅根 Imperatae Rhizoma, imperata [rhizome]).
