Loquat Gruel

枇杷粥 〔枇杷粥〕 pí pá zhōu

Source: Lǎo Lǎo Héng Yán 老老恒言

Ingredients

Actions: Clears the lung; transforms phlegm; relieves cough; downbears qì.

Indications: Lung heat cough with expectoration of yellow purulent phlegm; coughing of blood or nosebleed (nǜ xuè); stomach heat with vomiting and retching or hiccup.

Method: Add a decoction of loquat leaves to ready-made gruel and cook for a short time. The dried loquat leaves should be decocted in a muslin bag. Fresh ones may be used (30–60 gr) if the down is removed.

Rationale: Loquats have been eaten for their health-bestowing properties at least since the Táng dynasty and possibly longer.
