Loquat Gruel
枇杷粥 〔枇杷粥〕 pí pá zhōu

Ingredients
- Pí pá yè (枇杷叶 Eriobotryae Folium, loquat leaf) 10–15g
- Jīng mǐ (粳米 Oryzae Semen, non-glutinous rice) 30–60g
- Bīng táng (冰糖 Saccharon Crystallinum, rock candy)
Actions: Clears the lung; transforms phlegm; relieves cough; downbears qì.
Indications: Lung heat cough with expectoration of yellow purulent phlegm; coughing of blood or nosebleed (nǜ xuè); stomach heat with
Method: Add a decoction of loquat leaves to ready-made gruel and cook for a short time. The dried loquat leaves should be decocted in a muslin bag. Fresh ones may be used (30–60 gr) if the down is removed.
Rationale: Loquats have been eaten for their health-bestowing properties at least since the Táng dynasty and possibly longer.
