Rationale: Niú huáng clears heat and resolves toxin. Shè xiāng disperses swelling and binds. Rǔ xiāng and Mò yào quicken the blood and relieve pain. Awake to relief is a reference to the fact that the formula was originally taken with enough liquor to produce an inebriated sleep, from which the patient would awaken to find the swelling dispersed—an indication of its high efficacy. Standard commercial versions of this formula include Xióng huáng to increase the toxin-resolving effect.
