Chinaberry Root Bark Gruel
苦楝根粥 〔苦楝根粥〕 kǔ liàn gēn zhōu

Ingredients
- Kǔ liàn gēn pí (苦楝根皮 Meliae Radicis Cortex, chinaberry root bark) 10–15g
- Jīng mǐ (粳米 Oryzae Semen, non-glutinous rice) 30–60g
- Bīng táng (冰糖 Saccharon Crystallinum, rock candy)
Actions: Expels worms.
Indications: Roundworm accumulation with abdominal pain.
Method: Boil the chinaberry root bark over a low flame, strain, and boil the rice in the decoction. Add sugar to taste just before the end. If fresh bark is used, increase the amount to 30–60g.
Rationale: Kǔ liàn pí has been used to kill worms in China for over a thousand years. It is cold, bitter, and toxic. In addition to killing worms, it clears heat and dries dampness.
