苦楝根粥 〔苦楝根粥〕 kǔ liàn gēn zhōu

Source: Shèng Jì Zǒng Lù 圣济总录

Ingredients

Actions: Expels worms.

Indications: Roundworm accumulation with abdominal pain.

Method: Boil the chinaberry root bark over a low flame, strain, and boil the rice in the decoction. Add sugar to taste just before the end. If fresh bark is used, increase the amount to 30–60g.

Rationale: Kǔ liàn pí has been used to kill worms in China for over a thousand years. It is cold, bitter, and toxic. In addition to killing worms, it clears heat and dries dampness. Modern sources say that it is effective for tapeworm, pinworm, and whipworm, as well as roundworm and that it is also used to treat wind papules, scab (jiè), and lichen (xiǎn). This gruel should be taken once, and again after 5–7 days if necessary. Barks of trees to which cattle have been tethered are popularly considered unsuitable for use.
