Network-Quickening Efficacious Elixir
活络效灵丹 〔活絡效靈丹〕 huó luò xiào líng dān

Ingredients
- Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 15g
- Dān shēn (丹参 Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix, salvia [root]) 15g
- Rǔ xiāng (乳香 Olibanum , frankincense) 9g
- Mò yào (没药 Myrrha , myrrh) 9g
Actions: Quickens the blood and relieves pain.
Indications: Congealing of qì and blood with
Method: Prepare as a decoction or as a powder.
Dosage: For decoction, one lot per day. For powder, 12g three times a day.
Rationale: Dāng guī and Dān shēn both quicken and nourish the blood. Rǔ xiāng and Mò yào quicken the blood and relieve pain, as well as dispersing swelling and engendering muscle.
Variations:
- Leg pain: Add Niú xī (牛膝 Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, achyranthes [root]).
- Pain in the buttocks: Add Sāng zhī (桑枝 Mori Ramulus, mulberry twig).
Blood stasis abdominal pain : Add Táo rén (桃仁 Persicae Semen, peach kernel) and Wǔ líng zhī (五灵脂 Trogopteri Faeces, squirrel’s droppings).- Red swollen yáng-type sores: Jīn yín huā (金银花 Lonicerae Flos, lonicera [flower]), Lián qiào (连翘 Forsythiae Fructus, forsythia [fruit]), and Zhī mǔ (知母 Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, anemarrhena [root]).
- Hard white yīn-type sores: Add Ròu guì (肉桂 Cinnamomi Cortex, cinnamon bark) and Lù jiǎo jiāo (鹿角胶 Cervi Cornus Gelatinum, deer antler glue).
- Slow regrowth of flesh after sores have ruptured: Huáng qí (黄芪 Astragali Radix, astragalus [root]) and Zhī mǔ (知母 Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, anemarrhena [root]).
Welling-abscess (yōng) of the organs: Add Sān qī (三七 Notoginseng Radix, notoginseng [root]) and Niú bàng zǐ (牛蒡子 Arctii Fructus, arctium [seed]).
