Cold evil can cause injury to the body. Cold is a yīn evil, and by nature causes congealing, stagnation, and contracture. External contraction of cold prevents the normal diffusion of yáng qì, causing headache, aversion to cold, absence of sweating, generalized pain, and a tight floating pulse. When cold evil lodges in the sinews, it causes tension in the network vessels, which restricts the movement of qì and blood, thereby causing spasm, pain, and numbness.
