Wrap-boiling

包煎 〔包煎〕 bāo jiān

Boiling medicinals wrapped cloth. Highly sticky seeds such as plantago seed (Plantaginis Semen, 车前子 chē qián zǐ) are wrap-boiled to prevent them sticking to the pot and burning. Some materials such as inula flower (Inulae Flos, 旋覆花 xuán fù huā) are covered with a down that is hard to strain off and causes irritation to the throat if swallowed. Peach kernel (Persicae Semen, 桃仁 táo rén) pounded to a paste, as well as dragon bone (Mastodi Ossis Fossilia, 龙骨 lóng gǔ) and oyster shell (Ostreae Concha, 牡蛎 mǔ lì), may be wrap-boiled to keep the decoction clear of unnecessary particles.
