Urinary stoppage in pregnancy

妊娠小便不通 〔妊娠小便不通〕rèn shēn xiǎo biàn bù tōng

From The Origin and Indicators of Disease (诸病源候论 zhū bìng yuán hòu lùn). Urinary stoppage due to pressure on the bladder in the latter stages of pregnancy; attributed to timidity of center qì or kidney qì vacuity with impairment of qì transformation and movement of water and inhibition of bladder action.

Patterns

Qi vacuity (气虚 qì xū) is attended by shortness of breath, heavy-headedness and dizziness.

Medicinal therapy: Supplement the center and raise the fetus with Center-Supplementing Qì-Boosting Decoction (补中益气汤 bǔ zhōng yì qì tāng).

Kidney vacuity (肾虚 shèn xū) is attended by fidgetiness, cold limbs and fear of cold, and dizzy head.

Medicinal therapy: Warm the kidney and support yáng. Use Kidney Qì Pill (肾气丸 shèn qì wán).
