Ten questions

十问 〔十問〕 shí wèn

From Jing-Yue’s Complete Compendium (景岳全书 jǐng yuè quán shū, zá zhèng mó), inquiry into the following ten areas:

  1. cold and heat;
  2. sweating;
  3. head and body;
  4. stool and urine;
  5. appetite;
  6. chest;
  7. hearing;
  8. thirst;
  9. previous illnesses;
  10. cause [of present illness].

In addition, the practitioner should inquire into the effectiveness of previous medication, menstruation in women, and smallpox and measles in children.
