Spleen heat
脾热 〔脾熱〕 pí rè
A heat pattern arising from contraction of heat evil or excessive consumption of hot dry foods or liquor; characterized by red lips, dry throat, heart vexation, abdominal fullness or abdominal pain, constipation, and short voidings of yellow urine. It is attributed to external contraction of heat evil or excessive consumption of hot spicy and drying foods or liquor. In infants, externally contracted wind-heat can cause spleen heat giving rise to copious thick foamy drool that makes it difficult to swallow milk. In heavy drinkers, heart-spleen heat can cause a swollen tongue. This pattern is not mentioned in most modern textbooks.
